Mountain Spirit Nepal

Mountain Spirit is a non-government and non-profit organization registered in 1996 under the laws of Nepal. The organization is formed by a group of like-minded people from different mountain communities and their friends. The organization aims to improve livelihoods, protect environment and conserve mountain culture through capacity building, empowerment, awareness, and sustainable development initiatives with participation of local communities.

Vision:

Mountain Spirit envisions prosperous mountain communities with basic services, infrastructure, amenities, and conserved bio cultural diversity.

Mission:

Mountain Spirit is committed to empower and facilitate the mountain communities for resources mobilization and sustainable development initiatives.

Objectives:

• To empower mountain people and communities through advocacy, social mobilization and information and capacity building.

• To conserve mountain environment; and promote and preserve cultural heritages through awareness, education, and research.

• To improve mountain livelihoods through participatory needs identification, resource mobilization and implementation of sustainable development initiatives.

Our Work:

Mountain Spirit was the key implementing agency for the European Union-funded ‘Community-based Land and Forest Management Project’ (2009-2012) in Sagarmatha National Park. This project was implemented in collaboration with CESVI, an Italian NGO. The aim of the project was to contribute to the sustainable management of natural resources in the Himalayan region through the improvement of community-based land and forest management in the Park and its Buffer Zone. The key activities were conducting capacity building programs for sustainable forest management and developing operational plans for CFUGs.

MS supported the establishment of two health clinics in Shermathang Village of Sindhupalchowk (2000-2005) and Chyangmityang Village of Solukhumbu (2005-2009), both of which have now been successfully handed over to local management. The support included training clinic staff and local people on clinic management, infrastructure development and procurement of medicines, and establishing revolving funds to sustain the clinics beyond the project period.

MS conducted the Udayapur School Support Program (2006-2010), in collaboration with Mountain Spirit Deutschland. This involved supporting Nametar’s Bal Kanya Primary School in repairing school buildings, constructing new buildings, giving scholarships, and supporting teachers’ salaries as well as stationery, furniture and fixtures.

MS conducted the Taplejung Vegetable Farming Program (2007-2009) in collaboration with Mountain Spirit Deutschland. This included training and providing technical and financial support to local farmers for organic farming and marketing.

Successfully conducted Sexual Health / HIV Awareness Programme in four Village Development Committees (VDCs) in Sindhupalchowk (2001-2002) with the funding support from Programme for Appropriate Technology in Health (PATH), USA.

With support from Eco-Himal, MS implemented a program to promote high altitude vegetable gardening as well as capacity building of local tourism entrepreneurs in Thame Valley of Sagarmatha National Park. (2000-2002)

Other Activities:

Conducted a detailed socioeconomic and resource survey for the REDD+ Readiness program for World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Nepal in Ramechhap, Dolakha, Sindhupalchowk, Rasuwa, Ilam, Panchthar, Khotang and Bhojpur districts in the Sacred Landscape Region in 2011/12.

Designed and conducted numerous workshops and training programs on eco-tourism planning, lodge and hotel management, community development, income generation and forest management in Nepal, Sikkim and Tibet for various international organizations, including ICIMOD and the Mountain Institute (1997-2012).

A detailed socioeconomic baseline survey in Dudh Koshi Sub-River Management Project and Kanchenjunga Conservation Area Project for WWF-Nepal Program in 2007/8.

10-year impact assessment of the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area Project in 2007/08.

Conducted gender and social inclusion and appreciative inquiry trainings for graduate students and young professionals in collaboration with the Chandra Gurung Conservation Fund in 2011.

A participatory livelihood assessment field study in various districts in the Terai Arc Landscape to develop a strategic plan for World Wildlife Fund (WWF) in 2003.

Provided technical support to develop Trans-boundary Conservation Plans in Nepal and Tibet Autonomous Resign (TAR), in collaboration with the Mountain Institute (TMI), International Center for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) and Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation (DNPWC) in 1999.

Provided technical support for Participatory Learning and Action (PLA) and Enterprise Development Training in TAR (1998); Village Community Development Programs (VCDP) in Tibet Autonomous Region (2001); Langtang Eco-tourism Project (2002); Community Planning Workshop in Rasuwa (2003), Study for Tourism Development Potentiality (2007), in collaboration with The Mountain Institute (TMI).

Conducted Baseline Survey and Strategic Planning for Khumbu Successful Community Initiative Programs (2002); Kanchenjunga Conservation Area Project Evaluation Program (2002); Evaluation of Sagarmatha Agro Forestry Project (2002); Non Timber Forest Products (NTFP) Trade Survey in Kanchenjunga Conservation Area (2003); Socio-economic Baseline Survey in Shey Phoksundo National Park and Buffer Zone (2003); Participatory Livelihood Fieldwork in 10 Terai Arc Landscape Districts, (2003); Socio Economic Survey of KCA and Evaluation of KCAP (2007); Socio-Economic and Resource Survey for Dudh Koshi Sub-River Basin Management Project (2008), for WWF Nepal.

Conducted sample Surveys on Visitors, Porters, and Migration Dynamics (2007-2008) and preparation of Participatory Tools Manual (2008) for CESVI, an Italian INGO.

Conducted Social Mobilization and Gender Sensitization Trainings in 10 different districts of Micro Enterprise Development Program (MEDEP) funded by United Nations Development Program (UNDP)/Ministry of Industry.

Mountain Spirit’s members participated in Environment Conservation Camp in Seattle USA in the year of 1999, 2000 and 2001 organised by Earth Corps, USA.

Provided technical support to District Community and National Level ‘Vision 21′ Workshops on Water and Sanitation (1999) for Nepal Water for Health.

Conducted program for the promotion of Health System Management including HIV/TB in Dhading in 1999 for Macfarlane Burnet Centre (MBC), Australia.

Provided technical support for Eco-tourism Study Tour (2004); Opinion Survey of Trekking and Tour Operators on Trekking in Humla (2004); Handicrafts Assessment Survey in Humla (2005); and Study Tour and Community Based Tourism Planning (2005) for Nepal Trust (NT).

Conducted Institutional Analysis in Chaurikharka VDC, Solukhumbu (2003) for International Centre for Protected Landscape (ICPL).

Conducted International Allo (Nettle) Workshop in Kathmandu in 2004 in collaboration with The John Dunsmore Nepalese Textile Trust, UK

Conducted Community Audit Tool Development Field Visit in 2004 for Sherpa Association of Nepal (SAN)

Over the years Mountain Spirit also contributed to capacity building of various NGOs and CBOs. We have worked with Mother’s Group, Dunche, Rasuwa; Communities in Kaski; Communities in Sindhupalchowk; Yoksam community, Sikkim in India; Jomsom Mother’s Group, Mustang; Nepal Sherpa Student Forum, Kathmandu; Nepal Trust (NT); and Sherpa Association of Nepal (SAN).
