Children at Yangrima school before earthquake

Yangrima boarding school (April 2015)

  1.   General Background
    1. a.  Sermathang, Helambu
  1. Yangrima Boarding School

Yangrima Boarding School started as a non-formal education centre with 7 children and 1 teacher in 1986. The number of children attending these classes grew quickly and a Yangrima Primary School was registered with the district education office in Sindhupalchowk district by a local resident, Gopal Lama with the help of villagers and friends in 1989.

We secured grants from Cambridge University UK and other supporters to build our own school building in 1996. Yangrima grew as an independent secondary school and started preparing students for their SLC (School Leaving Certificate exams) from 1997. Our children secured the best results in SLC exams in the Sindhupalchowk district and most Yangrima Children also did well in music and sports. As an independent school we were able to teach the local Hyolmo language, religious texts and construct our own school calendar to reflect the local festivals and events.

By 1997 we had 450 students and about 50 boarding students (for children who came from more than 2 hours walk from Sermathang). We had our own building with classrooms and hostel.

However in 2001, Yangrima had to close due to the Maoist violence. In 2009 the school was restarted by former Yangrima students. Nima Lama (Principal) has been running the school since then with the help of Tashi Lama (Director) who is based in Kathmandu.

  1. c.  Yangrima Trust

Yangrima Trust was set up in 2008 to support Yangrima Boarding School. There are 5 trustees with a mandate for 5 years. The Trust is currently in the process of finalising its financial audit for the last 5 years and selecting a new committee.

  1. d.  Just Nepal Foundation

Many people responded to our call of ‘Yangrima Children Earthquake Help’ immediately after the first earthquake. This helped us act quickly and set up learning centres; start a safe hostel for children before monsoon and prepare a detailed rebuild plan for school, college and hostel facilities in Sermathang.

Just Nepal Foundation has evolved from Yangrima School and aims to address the broader needs in relation to education, health and community development starting in Helambu region.

  1. e.  Yangrima Children Hostel

Many of the children required shelter and care services urgently before the monsoon started. So we started Yangrima children hostel in a section of the newly built hotel in Sermathang village.

Dikshya Shah, with background in drama and psychosocial therapy, is our resident teacher. Dikshya makes sure that everything at the hostel runs smoothly and that children’s care is available during day and night.

A generous donation from Thousand Stars Foundation has helped us set up the hostel. We currently have 35 students and Mountain Spirit Deutschland e.V. is sponsoring 5 children.

2. Earthquake, its impact and our efforts

Sindhupalchowk district suffered the highest loss of lives during the Nepal Earthquake in April 2015. Most of the deceased are women from Tamang communities. Almost all the houses and schools in the Helambu region of Sindhupalchowk district are completely destroyed. Thousands of local subsistence farmers lost their homes, family members, livelihoods and are destitute. Many children do not have access to an education and are at risk of being trafficked.

Our classrooms, like all other schools in the area are completely destroyed. So our classes are now run in tents and temporary shelters in Sermathang village.

Immediately after the first earthquake we started the school clear-up project. Within two weeks, we started learning centres in Sermathang and two outreach learning centres in Bolgoan and Komrang –two of the worst hit villages. We supported 150 children overcome fear and trauma through psychological activities in the learning centres.

3. Partnership with MOUNTAIN SPIRIT DEUTSCHLAND e.V.

We are delighted to have the Chairman of MS Duetschland visit Sermathang and Yangrima School several times since the earthquake. Since our first meeting in Sermathang we have formed a very strong partnership and have already were able to deliver a lot together. Some of the support we have received from this partnership include:

  • Paul the Water Filter. This is used by over 50 people every day. Most of these are school children but the villagers can also use it.
  • Donations towards the School Building Project: We have received Euro 20,000 and Euro 18,000 from Petra on behalf of Mountain Spirit Deutschland. This has helped us start the building project.
  • Labdoo laptops. We have received 8 Labdoo laptops from Mountain Spirit Foundation Nepal on behalf of the Mountain Spirit Deutschland e.V.

4. Our vision (Yangrima school, college and hostel)

    5. Current Priorities

 Our current priorities include:

  •  Completing the School Buildings. We still need  to complete all classrooms.
  • Establishing the hostel. The children are safe, cared for and well fed. However there are room for improvement in the hostel which started only six months ago.
  • Improving the quality of education at Yangrima. The tents are not ideal classrooms. So moving to the new buildings will help improve the teaching.

6. Conclusion

The partnership with Mountain Spirit Deutschland a.V. has not only helped up rebuild our school and college facilities but also has brought hopes for the future. We hope that together we will be able to raise more money to complete the classrooms by April 2016 when the new school year starts.
